Inauguration of New International Research and Methodological Seminar: Spatial Icons. The Textual and Performative

On October 10, 2008 in the White Hall of the Russian Academy of Arts, 21 Prechistenka street,  on the initiative of Zurab Tsereteli, President of the Russian Academy of Arts, will be inaugurated a new International  Seminar: Spatial Icons. The Textual and Performative to be held within the framework of EIDOS  Research, Educational and Innovation Program.

On October 1, 2008 at the Age of 108 Passed Away Artist-Caricaturist Boris Efimov

On October 1, 2008 at the age of 108 passed away Boris Efimov, Hero of Socialist Labor (1990), People’s Artist of the USSR (1967), Full Member of the Russian Academy of Arts (1975), winner of three State Prizes (1950, 1951, 1972), Laureate of the Moscow City Hall prize “Legend of the Century” (2003).

In Honor of the 250th Anniversary of the Russian Academy of Arts Museum in St. Petersburg: Album-Catalogue of the 17th – Early 20th Century Paintings and Drawings From the Museum Collection and Funds

The Album-Catalogue of the 17th – 20th Century Paintings and Drawings from the collection and funds of the Research Museum of the Russian Academy of Arts has been published in honor of its 250th anniversary in a series “Treasures of Russian Art” by the White City publishing house. The book edited by Veronika Bogdan contains 126 illustrations representing paintings and drawings by Russian and European masters that are the highlights of the Museum’s collection.

Dedication Ceremony For the Sculpture of Christ the Savior in Syria

On September 24, 2008 with the blessing of Alexi II, Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia and Ignatius IV, Patriarch of Antioch and All the East, the 3m tall sculpture of Christ the Savior will be presented as a gift from Russian people to the monastery of St. Thecla in Maaloula, the most important Christian site in Syria. The bronze sculpture has been designed by Alexander Rukavishnikov, People’s Artist of Russia, Full Member of the Russian Academy of Arts.

According to RIA Novosti reports,  on September 23, 2008  the Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin approved the staff of the Coordination  Council for the 2008-2012 Program of Fundamental Researches of the state academies of sciences.

Ilya and Emilia Kabakov Have Been Elected Honorary Members of the Russian Academy of Arts

On September 17, 2008 at the award ceremony in the White Hall of the Russian Academy of Arts,  21  Prechistenka street, Ilya and Emilia Kabakov were presented with attributes of an Honorary Member of the Russian Academy of Arts.
In his greeting speech, Zurab Tsereteli expressed his regret, that the high honor was awarded to the celebrated artists with such a delay.

Marpho-Mariinskaya Convent Opened After Restoration

On September 15, 2008 in Moscow was inaugurated Marpho-Mariinskaya Cloister. On September 16, Alexi II, Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia consecrated  Pokrovski Cathedral, principle church of the Convent which is going to mark its centenary in 2009.

In Moscow Was Unveiled a Monument to Designer of Rocket and Space Technology Sergei Korolev

On September 3, 2008 the bronze monument to Sergei Korolev, founder of Russian space program was set up as a centerpiece of the renovated Alley of  Spacemen at VDNH subway station in Moscow. It has been designed by Salavat Scherbakov and Sergei Scherbakov in association with members of Korolev’s family and his friends.

Monument to Outstanding Neurophysiologist Natalya Bekhtereva Designed by Grigori Yastrebenetski to Be Unveiled in St. Petersburg

The bronze bust of the Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Natalya  Bekhtereva (1924-2008) will be dedicated on the Glory Alley of St. Petersburg Humanitarian University of Trade Unions on September 1, 2008.  The sculpture, designed by People’s Artist of Russia Grigori Yastrebenetski, will find its home next to busts of Dmitri Likhachev, Michael Anikushin, Andrei Petrov, Natalya Dudinskaya and other distinguished people.

The monument to the celebrated circus athlete Alexander Zass will find its home  in front of the Orenburg circus where he started out as a circus actor one hundred years ago. The monument designed by Alexander Rukavishnikov, Full Member of the Russian Academy of Arts, has been delivered to Orenburg to be inaugurated on the verge of the City Day on September1, 2008.

President of the Russian Academy of Arts Zurab Tsereteli Welcomed Paul Kulikovski, Great-Grandson of Grand Duchess Olga Alexandrovna in Tsereteli Art Gallery

On July 14, 2008 Zurab Tsereteli, President of the Russian Academy of Arts had a meeting with Paul Kulikovski, great-grandson of grand duchess Olga Alexandrovna, sibling of the last Russian Emperor Nicholas II. Paul Kulikovski is an economist and financier. He lives in Denmark, where Olga Romanova  resided till the end of her life.  The meeting has been also attended by Elena Ryurikova, director-general of a Charity Foundation set up in Moscow in 2006 by Dmitri Romanov,  great great-grandson of the Russian Emperor Nicholas I.  He is a president of the Foundation.

Presentation of Degree Works by Graduates of Architecture Department of V. Surikov Moscow State Academy Art Institute in Tsereteli Art Gallery

On June 23, 2008 in Tsereteli Art Gallery, 19 Prechistenka street, was held a presentation  of degree works by graduates of the Architecture Department of V. Surikov Moscow State Academy Art Institute. The topic of the defense was an elaboration of a pilot project for the international youth tourist city-satellite GAGARINGRAD with a memorial complex on the site where the first spaceman Yuri Gagarin landed. It is planned to be located near the city of Engels, Saratov Region and to be completed in 2011 to mark the 50th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin’s space flight.

Zurab Tsereteli Opened in Tokyo an Exhibition of Russian Avant-Garde From the Collection of the Moscow Museum of Modern Art

On June 21, 2008 Zurab Tsereteli, founder and Director of the Moscow Museum of Modern Art, President of the Russian Academy of Arts,  opened an exhibition of works from the collection of the Moscow Museum of Modern Art entitled Spring of Russian Avant-Garde.  The prestigious Bankamura Museum of Art in Tokyo is the first to present the early 20th century avant-garde works by such celebrated Russian artists as Natalia Goncharova, Niko Pirosmani, Kazimir Malevich, Marc Chagall, Paul Filonov and others who could create an unparalleled style of modern art that will continue to affect the world art.
