The Research Institute of Theory and History of Fine Arts of the Russian Academy of Arts invites you to take part in the Research Conference “The Russian Art Criticism of the 19 – 20th Centuries: Problems, Trends, Contexts. Personalities”, that will take place on April 27-28, 2022 in the White Hall of the Russian Academy of Arts (21 Prechistenka street, Moscow) and online in ZOOM.

 

At present, it is significant to trace the development process of the Russian and Soviet art criticism both in historical and interdisciplinary contexts in order to reveal the most important and polemic aspects of art criticism at various stages, as well as key positions in some visions of art when the art criticism tries to understand and evaluate the real art process or, on the opposite, makes his own demands on art. The Conference is aimed at comprehending both the continuity in aesthetic and social assessments of artworks and antagonistic positions. The Conference interdisciplinary character contributes to identification of common judgements of art on the basis of its various types – fine arts, literature, music, theater, cinema.

 

The main topics to be discussed:   

-Art criticism as part of art history and professional branch of journalism (in relation to all types of art);

-Artist – public – art critic: specific features of communication at various historical stages (in relation to all types of art);

-Art critic as an active participant of an art process (in relation to all types of art). The correlation of the theoretical thought and social atmosphere at various stages of Russian art criticism;

-The interest of Russian criticism in the European idea of art;

-The “fruits” of Enlightenment ideas in art criticism and emergence of Romanticism ideas in the literature criticism of the first half of the 19^th century;

-The public idea and art criticism of the 1850-1860s. The establishment of the method of critical realism and method of Socialist realism. The points of interaction;

-The role of criticism of the Silver Age in changing the nature of critical activity;

-From the Silver Age essays to the study of the laws of art process;

-The role of criticism of the formation of the theory of art in the 1920s;

-The reflection of social, cultural and political collisions in the criticism of the 1920s;

-The literary and art criticism of the 1930s-1950s as censorship;

-The criticism in literary and art editions of the Russian emigration;

-The role of the criteria of the artistic quality: from approval to interdiction;

-Discussions in the art criticism of the 1960s-1970s as a way to get away from the previous standards and expand the borders of the idea of the Socialist realism;

-Problems of the methods and role of the art criticism in the system of art life since 1970s till nowadays.
