THE SOVIET ART AT THE BREAKING POINT: 1960s - 1980s. IN HONOR OF THE 60TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE EXHIBITION “THE 30TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE MOSCOW UNION OF ARTISTS” IN THE MOSCOW MANEZH

The Department of Art History and Art Criticism, the Painting Department of the Russian Academy of Arts in partnership with the Moscow Union of Artists invite you to take part in the Research Conference “The Soviet Art at the Breaking Point: 1960s – 1980s. In Honor of the 60th Anniversary of the Exhibition “The 30th Anniversary of the Moscow Union of Artists” in the Moscow Manezh, that will take place in the White Hall of the Russian Academy of Arts (21 Prechistenka street, Moscow) on June 2, 2022 and online in ZOOM.

The Sixtiers often called “children of the XX CPSU Congress” and the generation of the “Thaw” have played a significant role in the fate of Russia in the second half of the 20th – early 21st century. The intellectuals born between 1922-1940 brought into life and culture of the country the urge for freedom and democracy. Among such unforgettable noted cultural events were famous poetry readings at the Polytechnic Museum, establishment of the Sovremennik theater by Oleg Efremov, Taganka Theater of Yury Lyubimov, the popularity of bard songs of Bulat Okudzhava, Vladimir Vysotsky, Yury Vizbor, the birth of the “severe” style in fine arts, key exhibition in the Moscow Manezh Exhibition Hall dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the Moscow Union of Artists. The Conference deals with fundamental problems in the fine arts development in Russia in the second half of the 20th – early 21st century, as well as studies the influence of the creative legacy of artists of the 1960s.

The main topics of the Conference:

-The historical significance of the exhibition “The 30th Anniversary of the Moscow Union of Artists” at the Moscow Manezh Exhibition Hall in 1962 in the context of Russian and world culture;
-The new pictorial thinking in the work of leading masters of the “thaw” generation and traditions of the 1920s – 1930s;
- Philosophical, social, historical and artistic sources of the Sixtiers in the 1950s-1960s;
-The new figurativeness and diversity of stylistic trends in Russian art in the 1950s-1980s. The interaction of various types of art: theater, cinema, literature, music, architecture, fine arts and comprehensive study of arts of the 1960s – 1980s by art critics;
-Artists of the 1960s and Soviet underground art of the 1950s – 1990s; pros and cons;
-Ely Belyutin studio “The New Reality” under criticism of Nikita Khruschev and the formation of unofficial art;
-The creative work and personality of leading artists of the second half of the 20th century and their impact on the generation of artists of the 1970s – 1980s;
- Artists of the 1960s and renovation of the Russian Academy of arts in the late 1980s – 2000s.
