THEATRICAL ARTIST’S SKETCHES AND DESIGN AS MUSEUM RARITY: INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE AS PART OF THE INTERNATIONAL THEATER AND MUSEUM FORUM IN MOSCOW
In honor of the 125th anniversary of A.A. Bakhrushin State Central Theater Museum and the Year of Theater in Russia, from October 8-11, 2019 Moscow will host the International Theater and Museum Forum “World Theatrical Heritage: Preservation and Representation in Museum Space”. The organizers of the Forum are the Culture Ministry of the Russian Federation, Museums Union of Russia, the Russian Committee of the International Council of Museums (ICOM), the Russian Academy of Arts, the State Institute of Art History, A.A. Bakhrushin State Central Theater Museum.
The key event of the Forum is an International Conference on the problems of preservation of theatrical heritage and methods of its presentation that will open in A.A. Bakhrushin State Central Theater Museum on October 8, 2019.
One of the Conference’s sessions on the theme “Theatrical Artist’s Sketches and Design as Museum Rarity” will take place in the White Hall of the Russian Academy of Arts (21 Prechistenka street, Moscow) on October 09, 2019 at 15.00.
Despite of the current trend of the art movement in the direction of technological design, the importance of theatrical sketches and design in their man-made traditional version has not lost its significance in today’s stage practice. The theatrical sketch contributes to a better understanding of the concept, emotional background, individual stylistic manner and serves as an inspiration basis for transition to more innovative forms.
The artist’s theatrical sketches are the only things that remain in the space of time while all other forms for preservation of memory of the performance including video films do not so expressively reveal the role of a set designer. The artist’s sketches are also of great value as easel works of art.
The Conference will be attended by the President of the Russian Academy of Arts Zurab Tsereteli, the Director-General of A.A. Bakhrushin State Central Theater Museum Dmitry Rodionov and Academician-Secretary of the Theater and Cinema Decorative Art Department of the Russian Academy of Arts Boris Messerer, noted art historians, set designers, artists and museum workers.
