The Russian Academy Of Arts

On October 28, 2015 at 13.00 in Tula  there will be an unveiling ceremony for the monument to the eminent Russian writer Gleb Uslensky (1843-1902) timed to his birthday. The author of the monument is the People’s Artist of the USSR and Russia, President of the Russian Academy of Arts Zurab Tsereteli. The 2.5 m tall sculpture cast at the “Liteiny Dvor” foundry in St. Petersburg represents the figure of the writer sitting in a chair.

The artist has also sponsored all the expenses for the monument’s fabrication and transportation to the site. The monument has been placed in Mendeleevskaya street in a square named after the celebrated writer and a native of Tula Gleb Uspensky. The Tula impressions formed the basis of his well-known series of essays  “Mores of Rasteryaeva Street”. The writer started his literature career in Leo Tolstoy’s “Yasnaya Polyana” magazine, at Nickolai Nekrasov’s invitation Gleb Uspensky began working for “Sovremennik” magazine, later his essays and stories were published  in such major magazines as “North Lights”, “Notes of the Motherland”, “Russian Thought”, “Russian Statement”, etc.

The unveiling of the monument to Gleb Uspensky in the Year of Literature in Russia is a gift to all the residents of Tula. For many years Zurab Tsereteli pays homage to outstanding state and religious figures, representatives of science, literature and culture who played a significant role in Russian and world history. Among his monuments to eminent novelists and poets are monument to Nickolai Gogol in Rome (Italy), to Honore de Balzac in Agde (France), Marina Tsvetaeva (Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie), a vast series of his contemporaries in Tsereteli Art Gallery in Moscow including bas relief and sculptural portraits of Anna Akhmatova, Boris Pasternak, Osip Mandelstam, Sergey Esenin, Alexander Solzhenitsyn, Chinguiz Aitmatov, Andrey Voznesensky, Bella Akhmadullina, Evgeni Evtushenko and others.
