The UNESCO Five Continents Medal Was Awarded to the President of the Russian Academy of Arts Zurab Tsereteli
The President of the Russian Academy of Arts Zurab Tsereteli has been awarded the UNESCO Five Continents Medal for his outstanding contribution in his capacity as a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador to the numerous initiatives aiming to support artistic education among youth, as well as for his efforts to provide master classes and support young talent in the Russian Federation.
The award ceremony took place on April 21, 2014 at the Foreign Ministry of the Russian Federation in Moscow during the session of the Commission of the Russian Federation for UNESCO in honor of 60 years of Membership in UNESCO and approval of the UNO Charter on education, science and culture. The session was attended by the Foreign Minister of the RF Sergey Lavrov, UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova, Russia’s Permanent Representative to UNESCO Eleonora Mitrofanova, members of the State Duma of the Russian Federation, figures of culture.
The UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova and Russia’s Permanent Representative to UNESCO Eleonora Mitrofanova also visited Tsereteli Art Gallery, 19 Prechistenka street. They saw its rich exposition including Zurab Tsereteli’s recent works and noted the originality of his talent and boundless creative energy.
Taking into account the significant role of the Russian Academy of Arts in preservation of the unique art school, development of international programs aimed at the promotion of a cultural dialogue, the UNESCO suggested the inclusion of the Russian academy of Arts in the Memory of the World register.
