Opening of the Monument to Heroes of Mimino Film in Tbilisi
On October 14, 2011 in Tbilisi (Georgia) was unveiled a monument to characters of the well-known Mimino film directed by George Danelia. The monument has been designed by the President of the Russian Academy of Arts, People’s Artist of the USSR and Russian Federation, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Zurab Tsereteli.
The sculptural composition portrays three main heroes of the film – Valiko Mizandari, Rubik Hachikyan and Ivan Volokhov. The composition also includes the figure of the film director George Danelia.
“Why have I made this monument? I love the heroes of the film, the way they think and tried to preserve the spirit of my favorite film” – noted Zurab Tsereteli.
The main role of the pilot Valiko Mizandari in the film “Mimino” (translated from the Georgian as falcon) was played by the Georgian actor and singer Vakhtang Kikabidze. The role of Ruben Hachikyan was played by the famous Armenian actor Frunzik Mkrtchan. The Russian actor Eugene Leonov played the role of the war veteran Volokhov. The film was released in 1977 and became a great hit.
“The monument stands in the right place – in this old district of Avlabar. I am happy, that today there are so many people here. I love you all. Unfortunately, Eugene Leonov and Frunzik Mkrtchan are not with us, they are not alive” – said Vakhtang Kikabidze at the opening ceremony.
The ceremony was attended by the First Lady of Georgia Ms. Sandra Rulofs, representatives of the city authorities, numerous guests and residents of Tbilisi.
In Georgia and its capital Tbilisi there are many places connected with the works by Zurab Tsereteli: a huge monumental ensemble “History of Georgia”; monument to St. Nino Equal to the Apostle; monument to St. George the Victorious in the downtown of Tbilisi; monument to the founders of the Georgian National Ballet Nino Ramishvili and Iliko Sukhishvili; mosaic and stained glass compositions for the Palace of Trade Unions and the city terminal in Tbilisi, mosaics and sculptural compositions in the resort city of Pitsunda and others.
