Annual Yury Orekhov Prizes Were Awarded to Young Sculptors
On May 31, 2011 in the White Hall of the Russian Academy of Arts, 21 Prechistenka street, was held the 7th annual award ceremony for Yury Orekhov Prizes in the field of sculpture. The Prize was set up in 2005 by the “Creative Legacy of Academician Yury Orekhov” Museum and the “Sculptor” Foundation for Support to Russian Sculptors under the auspices of the Russian Academy of Arts to foster young talented sculptors.
Yury Orekhov (1927-2001) is one of the prominent Russian sculptors of the late 20th century who was appreciated both in Russia and internationally. He was a People’s Artist of the USSR, Academician and Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Arts, Honorary Member of the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara (Italy), winner of Lenin and State Prizes.
The President of the Russian Academy of Arts Zurab Tsereteli and Director-General of the “Sculptor” Foundation Grigory Orekhov presented the nominees - students of the Academy art lyceums and institutes, as well as S. Stroganov Moscow State University of Industrial and Applied Arts, the prize money, diplomas and golden badges in the form of a walnut (the surname “Orekhov” is translated as “walnut”). The ceremony was attended by heads and teachers of art institutes, members of the Russian Academy of Arts, the sculptor’s friends and colleagues.
