Russia-France: Three Centuries of Cultural Ties

The exhibition project of the Russian Academy of Arts “Russia-France: Three Centuries of Cultural Ties” to be launched in Paris on June 11, 2010 aims to show the history and main development stages of the Academy of Arts in Russia. One of the principle goals of the project is to specify the originality of the Russian academic art school, as well as to emphasize the significant role of the French culture, the contribution of the French eminent figures of architecture, fine arts and science to the formation of Russian art and academic art school representing a unique model of classical art education based on the centuries-old European fine arts development.

On June 11, in the halls of the Orangerie – Palais du Luxemburg, Senate of France there will be an inauguration of the exhibition “The Russian Academy of Arts: Space of Academic School”. The presentation of the sculptural compositions by Zurab Tsereteli: “Musketeers”; “Great Masters” (Pablo Picasso, Amedeo Modigliani, Marc Chagall, Henri Matisse, Vincent Van Gough); “Rousseau and Pirosmani” will take place on June 11, 2010 within the framework of the Russian national exhibition in Grande-Palais.

From June 14, 2010 the Academie des Beaux-Arts (the French Academy of Fine Arts) will host a show “The Russian Academy of Arts: History and These Days”. One of the centerpieces of the exposition will be a big canvas “Nicholas II in the Academy” by the French painter Andre Brouillet from the collection of the French Academy of Arts. The canvas has been kept in the storeroom of the French Academy of Arts for many decades and was in a very poor condition. Its restoration was completed in March, 2010. The picture is devoted to one of distinguished pages of the Russian-French relations and depicts a visit of the Russian Emperor Nicholas II and Empress Alexandra Fedorovna to the French Academy of Fine Arts accompanied by the French President Felix Faure.

The exhibition “Dialogue of Cultures in the Space of Academic School” will be opened in the exhibition halls of the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris on June 21, 2010.

Within the framework of the Russian national exhibition in Grande Palais on June 14, 2010 will be held an international panel discussion “Russia-France: Three Centuries of Scientific and Cultural Ties” that will involve representatives of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Russian Academy of Arts, the French National Center for Scientific Research, the Institute of France, Paris Sorbonne University.
