Contemporary Religious Art: Panel Discussion at the Russian Academy of Arts

1. A canon and liturgical creative work. Understanding of the canon by contemporary icon painters. The scope of creativity within the framework of the canon.
2. The diversity of art trends in the contemporary religious art and a problem of images. The Byzantine art, the 21st century icons, academic icons and icon painting: a larger range of sources. The selection of art guidelines depending on the region. The problem of an icon authenticity.
3. Religious and secular workshops: Common problems’ solving.
4. Icons in the context of a personal piety. Mass “production” and a private commission. The liturgical creativity and market demands.
5. The interior decoration of old and newly made churches. The selection of a “language” of icon painting depending on the structure of an architectural space.
6. Stylistic peculiarities in the work by Russian church artists outside Russia: Local traditions to be taken into account.
7. The urgent problem of today – searches for means of portraying newly proclaimed saints. The principles of iconography and stylistics formation.
8. The study and rebirth of ancient techniques. The results of the experience in the use of new decorative materials. The problem of legality in the use of mechanical reproductions of originals as well as computer technologies in the icon painting.
9. Professional art education for icon painters. The academic school and its contribution to the training of icon painters. The copying from old masterpieces as a necessary practice for young artists and an individual liturgical creative work.
