Russia Marks the 200th Anniversary of Nikolai Gogol’s Birth

On April 1, 2009 Russia marks the 200th birth anniversary of the Russian great novelist Nikolai Gogol. In 2002 a bronze monument to Nikolai Gogol by President of the Russian Academy of Arts Zurab Tsereteli was unveiled in Villa Borghese in Rome, one of Gogol’s favorite places where he had lived and worked.

The inscription on the base runs: “I can only write about Russia in Rome, only  there does it stand before me in all its colossal grandeur”.
