Monument to the Patriarch in Moscow
He created a full-length sculptural portrait of the Patriarch in 2003 within My Contemporaries series. Zurab Tsereteli met with Alexy II more than once, particularly during his work on the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. The sculptor has collected a lot of the Patriarch’s photographs that he is going to show to the public in February.
At present, the monument to Alexy II stands in one of the halls of the museum and exhibition complex of the Russian Academy of Arts, 19 Prechistenka street, near the statue of the Patriarch-Catholicos of All Georgia Elijah II – the Patriarchs maintained friendly relations. Elijah II has come to Moscow to pay his last respects to Alexy II. Now, Zurab Tseretely intends to place the monument to Alexy II in the courtyard of the new Museum of Modern Art of the Russian Academy of Arts in Gogolevsky boulevard. “It is of big significance to remind the new generation of such people” – said Tsereteli.
