Unveiling Ceremony for the Monument to Metropolitan of Moscow Platon (Levshin)

On the territory of Nikolo-Perervinski Monastery in Moscow will be placed a monument to a prominent hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church, preacher and theologian, Metropolitan of Moscow Platon (Levshin, 1737-1812). The monument has been designed by Anatoli Bichukov, People’s Artist of Russia, Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Arts.

The monument will be unveiled on October 26, commemoration day of Iverskaya Icon of Our Lady. One hundred years ago, there was a consecration of the Monastery’s Cathedral in honor of this wonderworking icon. The statue of the preacher in Metropolitan robes with a crozier in his left hand resting on a cylindrical base of white marble will find its home near the Cathedral.

Metropolitan Platon, preacher and silver-tongued orator, was a religious teacher of the future Russian Emperor Paul I. In 1775, being an Archbishop of Moscow and Kaluga he set up a Theological Seminary in Nikolo-Perervinski Monastery, then located not far from Moscow. He was also a founder of the Savior Bethany Monastery in the vicinity of the Holy Trinity St. Sergius Laura. His “ Brief History of Russian Religion” became the first book on the history of Russian Orthodox Church.
