Masterclass in Kazan
Within the framework of meetings in Kazan on February 4, 2008 President of the Russian Academy of Arts Zurab Tsereteli gave a masterclass in N. Feshin Kazan Art College.
Initially named the Kazan Art School, it was founded in 1895 as an academic higher art education entity of the Imperial Academy of Arts comprising departments of painting, engraving, architecture and sculpture run by N. Feshin. The architecture department was set up by Karl Mufke who initiated the construction of an individual building for the Art School and brilliantly executed his plan.
Since the Revolution of 1917, the gorgeous edifice designed by Karl Mufke in the “Russian style” with a glass roof provided for painting and sculpture classes has changed several owners and lost a part of its magnificent interiors. Four years ago the building was given back to the Kazan Art College. It is here, that Zurab Tsereteli has given his masterclass. President of the Russian Academy of Arts appreciated the gift of young Kazan painters and promised to do his best to open the Academy workshops in the Art College and arrange masterclasses by noted Academicians of the Russian Academy of Arts.
Besides, it is planned to establish in 2008 an affiliate of V. Surikov Moscow State Academy Art Institute which is due to restore the Kazan Art College its original status.
