The Russian Academy Of Arts

On June 21, 2007 in the halls of the museum “Creative Legacy of Academician Yuri Orekhov”  students from Moscow and St. Petersburg were awarded  Y. Orekhov prizes in the field of sculpture at the 3rd annual ceremony arranged by the Russian Academy of Arts and the “Sculptor”  Moscow Foundation to Support of Russian Sculptors.
 
Traditionally, the Russian Academy of Arts fosters young artists and encourages the most talented ones.  The prizes were presented by President of the Russian Academy of Arts Zurab Tsereteli and Director-General of the “Sculptor” Foundation G. Orekhov in the presence of the People’s Artist of the Russian Federation and Full Member of the Russian Academy of Arts Yuri Chernov, head  of the Division for Preservation of Art Legacy of the Moscow Committee for Culture  A. Tantlevski, the sculptor’s friends and associates.

The prizes were awarded to:
Olga Sarkisyan, student of the Moscow Art Lyceum of the Russian Academy of Arts;
Cyrill Chizhov, student of  V. Surikov  Moscow State Academy Art Institute (the studio headed by Alexander  Rukavishnikov);
Galina Polykarpova, student of S. Stroganov Moscow State Art and Industrial University (the chair headed by Alexander Burganov);
Simon Zhokhov, student of I. Repin St. Petersburg  State Academy Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (the studio headed by Albert Charkin).

Besides the above prize, the winners received a special memorial golden badge shaped like a  walnut (according to the surname “Orekhov” meaning “walnut”). 

In 2007, there will be the 80th birth anniversary of Yuri Orekhov (1927-2001).  Yuri Orekhov is a noted  Russian sculptor who was appreciated both in Russia and abroad. He was a Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Arts and Honorary Member of the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara (Italy); winner of Lenin and State Prizes.  Yuri Orekhov worked in almost all types of sculpture and was one of the most talented and outstanding Russian sculptors of the late 20th century. His last years were dedicated to recreation of the sculptural ornamentation of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow.  The “Sculptor” Foundation established by him  unites the most gifted Russian sculptors  and provides all possible support to them.
