The 200th Anniversary of the Diplomatic Relations Between Russia and the United States of America
New York, June 2, 2007 – RIA Novosti, Dmitri Gornostaev. More than 500 people took part in the celebration on Saturday in New York in honor of the 200th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between Russia and the United States of America, informs RIA Novosti reporter.
“The foundation of current relations between our countries and the tradition of special mutual responsibility for maintaining peace and stability were set up during World War 11 in the struggle against fascism” - noted in his welcoming speech Consul General of the Russian Federation in New York Sergey Garmonin.
The event arranged under the patronage of the Embassy of the Russian Federation to the United States and the Consulate General of the Russian Federation in New York was attended by diplomats, public figures, businessmen and representatives of the Russian community. Among honored guests were Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin, former Governor of the State of New York and a potential candidate to run for the United States presidency George Pataki, Russian sculptor Zurab Tsereteli.
The event took place aboard a three-decker ship that made a cruise around Manhattan, passed by the Statue of Liberty and the “Tear of Grief” monument by Zurab Tsereteli and returned to piers in Chelsea. In his address to all those present the sculptor remarked that the relations between Russia and the United States had been strengthened not only by politicians and diplomats, but also by figures of art.
“It is art and culture that have filled the relations between our countries with unique content, laid the basis of their stability that does not depend on political winds. The art means kindness and while the kindness determines the relations between Russia and the United States there will peace on our planet” – said Tsereteli.
The letter of greeting was directed to the participants by the Chairman of the Committee for Foreign Affairs of the Council of Federation Senator Mikhail Margelov.
