The joint meeting of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Arts and Scientific Council of V. Surikov Moscow State Academy Art Institute dedicated to results of the 2006-2007 academic year was held in V. Surikov Art Institute on June 7, 2007. It was chaired by People’s Artist of the Russian Federation, head of V. Surikov Art Institute Andrei Bichukov and attended by prominent masters of home fine arts – Tair Salakhov, Dmitri Zhilinsky, Michael Kurilko-Ryumin, Valentin Sidorov, Alexander Rukavishnikov, Eugene Maximov, Michael Pereyaslavets and others, professors and teachers of V. Surikov Art Institute, members of the art education division of the Russian Academy of Arts. Under the examination were works by the 1st – 5th year students of faculties of painting, sculpture and architecture.

On May 25, 2007 the Russian Academy of Arts congratulated the prominent artist, Full Member of the Russian Academy of Arts People’s Artist of the Russian Federation, Winner of State Prizes Dmitri Zhilinski with his 80th jubilee. The celebration ceremony took place in the White Hall of the Russian Academy of Arts and was followed by a film about the artist’s art.

11-05-2007 3:00 pm On 9 May 2007, the Director-General, Mr Koïchiro Matsuura, opened at the Organization’s Headquarters a solo exhibition of works of Zurab Tsereteli, President of the Russian Academy of Arts and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador. The inauguration ceremony took place in the presence of His Excellency Mr Alexandre Alexeevitch Avdeev, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to France, His Excellency Mr Vladimir Kalamanov, Ambassador, Permanent Delegate of the Russian Federation to UNESCO, and Mr Zurab Tsereteli.

The UNESCO Picasso Gold Medal was presented on Wednesday to the celebrated Russian sculptor Zurab Tsereteli for his remarkable personal contribution to development of the Russian Academy of Arts which is celebrating its 250th anniversary this year. The ceremony was attended by members of the Academy presidium, UNESCO Director-General Koichiro Matsuura, Russian diplomats.

In his speech at the Annual Meeting of UNESCO Goodwill Ambassadors in Paris on April 3, 2007 President of the Russian Academy of Arts and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Zurab Tsereteli focused on the following directions of his activity:
“Of special interest to me in my recent creative endeavors have been not only artistic tasks, but also problems relating to possibilities of the world improvement through art. Today, it is very important to make people understand how much can be achieved by the powerful impact of art affirming mutual understanding, respect and tolerance in relations among representatives of diverse cultures and religious confessions for the benefit of betterment of modern world community”.

Representatives of the world noted family Michael and Gustav Nobel have come to Moscow to be honored guests at the presentation of the Russian National Foundation for the Nobel Family Heritage. The ceremony will take place in Zurab Tsereteli Art Gallery and will be attended by representatives of the Public Chamber, the Duma, businessmen and ambassadors to Russia.

On March 23, 2007 the President of the Russian Academy of Arts Zurab Tsereteli was awarded the <a href="http://portal.unesco.org/en/ev.php-URL_ID=26454&URL_DO=DO_TOPIC&URL_SECTION=201.html" target="blank">UNESCO Picasso Gold Medal</a>. The UNESCO Director-General Koichiro Matsuura noted, that in the year of the 250th Anniversary of the foundation of the Russian Academy of Arts this would be a fitting manner to pay tribute to the venerable and outstanding institution as well as to the remarkable personal contribution of Zurab Tsereteli in developing the Russian Academy of Arts as one of the most prestigious institutions devoted to art education and to promotion of cultural dialogue at the international level and the exchange of ideas between artists of all European nations.

The unveiling ceremony for the monument to the 52nd Japanese Prime Minister Itiro Hatoyama is going to be attended by the Japanese and Russian honorary guests, including Prime-Minister of the Russian Federation Michail Fradkov, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Japan Michail Belyi, Deputy Mayor of Moscow Joseph Ordjonikidze, President of the Russian Academy of Arts and sculptor of the monument Zurab Tsereteli, Japanese Prime-Minister, Deputy Foreign Minister of Japan, Chairman of the House pf Representatives, members of the Hatoyama family.
A reception will be hosted after the ceremony to award diplomas to the Chairman of the 21st Century Russian Committee Yuri Luzhkov and President of the Russian Academy of Arts and designer of the monument Zurab Tsereteli.

The Russian Academy of Arts headed by Zurab Tsereteli since 1997 was conceived and established as an educational entity. Throughout its history, the oldest Russian cultural institution has obtained a variety of new functions. Nowadays, the Russian Academy of Arts is a premier state creative and research entity combining prominent artists and creative people of the nation. Since the outset of the Academy, education has remained the most significant element of its multisided activity.

On September 11, 2006 in the United States in the city of Bayonne, New Jersey there was a dedication ceremony for the monument to the struggle against world terrorism. The monument by Zurab Tsereteli, President of the Russian Academy of Arts, People’s Artist of Russia, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador stands opposite lower Manhattan where the World Trade Center towers stood and about three thousand people became victims of the attacks. The monumental composition was presented as a gift from the Russian President Vladimir Putin, the people of Russia to the people of the United States on the fifth anniversary of the tragedy symbolizing, that Russia, which also experienced acts of terrorism not once, shared the grief of losses with the United States.
