The State Museum of Contemporary Art of the Russian Academy of Arts, 10 Gogolevsky Boulevard, is housed in a beautiful Moscow mansion designed by the noted Russian architect Matvei Kazakov in the late 18th century. The Museum offers a broad range of visual art from debut displays of young artists, conceptual expositions to large-scale international exhibition projects.
In the inner courtyard of the Museum stands a Crystal Chapel authored by the President of the Russian Academy of Arts Zurab Tsereteli. The 18-m tall Chapel recreates the image of the lost cast-iron Chapel of St. Alexander Nevsky built according to the design of Dmitry Chichagov in Okhotny Ryad in 1882 to commemorate the Balcan War heroes. The Chapel was ruined in 1922 and its destruction is considered to have initiated an atheistic vandalism in Moscow.
As it is conceived by the President of the Russian Academy of Arts, the Chapel, sculptural high-reliefs – icons and the monument to the Holy Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Alexi II in front of the Chapel attach to the Museum interior space a special sacral importance – rebirth of the Russian spirituality and culture.
