THE ENLIGHTENMENT: SPECIAL PROJECT OF THE YAROSLAVL BIENNALE UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE RUSSIAN ACADEMY OF ARTS
Dates: May 21 – June 26, 2022
Venue: Museum of Contemporary Art “The House of Muses” (23a Chaikovsky street, Yaroslavl, Russia)
The Russian Academy of Arts in partnership with the Moscow Museum of Modern Art and The House of Muses Museum of Contemporary Art present a new special international project of the Yaroslavl Biennale including over 100 participants. The project is curated by the Honorary Member of the Russian Academy of Arts Gor Chahal. For more than 20 years he has been involved in creative practices opening a new page in today’s culture of Russia. According to Gor Chahal, the Christ-centered art is the benchmark that gives prospects for development and overcoming the crisis of the culture of postmodernism. “The Enlightenment through Blackening” is a name of one of his works which inspired the event organizers to set the Enlightenment topic to all creative projects in 2022.
The project is dedicated to the jubilee year of the Russian Academy of Arts and is held within one of the programs of fundamental researches of the Academy entitled “Art and Religion in Modern Culture”, as well as continues the Academy’s research and creative project “Byzantine. Ru”, that was of great success on display in the “Chersonesus” Historical and Architectural Museum-Preserve in 2015. The experience of combining in one space objects of religious and the so called actual art by artists who deal with Christian themes proves how well the works complement and reveal each other in dialogue. The project’s participants are artists of different generations, trends and honors. They are united by their faith in the enlightenment through culture and art.
The program also includes the show of video-installations in the evening on the Yroslavl City Day (May 28, 2022 at 22.30) in the downtown of the city.
