THE SCHOOL OF AN ARTIST. THE CREATIVE WORKSHOPS OF THE RUSSIAN ACADEMY OF ARTS: EXHIBITION PROJECT

The Russian Academy of Arts presents a major exhibition project of over 200 works by the Creative Workshops’ Academicians, graduates and artists-trainees entitled “The School of an Artist. The Creative Workshops of the Russian Academy of Arts”.

 

The Creative Workshops of the Russian Academy of Arts play a significant role in art education. Set up in 1947, when the Academy of Arts was reestablished, they were aimed at providing the most gifted graduates of art institutes with an opportunity to continue their education and perfect their skills under the supervision of eminent masters.

 

The exhibition project proves the efficiency of the Academy’s three-level system of art education - “school-institute-academy (creative workshop) and urgent need in the revival of the full structure for training masters of such specialties as molding of sculpture, production of smalt, creation of large scale mosaics, fresco painting and other art professions. Each of the Academy’s six Workshops has its own remarkable history and traditions.

 

The Workshop of Monumental Painting is headed by the People’s Artist of Russia, Academician of the RAA Evgeny Maximov – the world recognized master of monumental art, talented teacher, author of wall paintings of a lot of Orthodox churches in many countries throughout the world, including the biggest in Russia Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow.

 

The heads of the Workshop of Easel Painting are legendary artists Alexey Tkachev and Sergey Tkachev - Academicians of the Russian Academy of Arts, People’s Artists of the USSR.

 

The Workshop of Graphic Art headed by the Academician of the Russian Academy of Arts, People’s Artist of Russia, master of landscapes and book illustrations is distinguished by the diversity of techniques used in works by its trainees. These are color and monochrome lithograph, etching, serigraphy, water color, pastel, pencil and coil drawing, sketches, prints and others.

 

The sculpture produced in The Workshop of Sculpture under the supervision of the brilliant representative of the celebrated Tsygal dynasty, Academician of the Russian Academy of Arts, People’s Artist of Russia Alexander Tsygal proves the high professional level and freedom of creative thinking, generalization and transformation of forms.

 

Original, often unexpected artistic solutions are offered by young masters of scenography. Under the guidance of the renowned Boris Messerer, the People’s Artist of Russia and Academician of the Russian Academy of Arts who heads the Workshop of Theater Decorative Art the trainees have created remarkable sketches of the scenery, costumes and set designs, some of them have already been realized on the stage. 

 

The Workshop of architecture is headed by the Academician of the RAA, Honored Architect of Russia Valery Rzhevsky.

 

On display are historical canvases and genre paintings, portraits of our contemporaries, landscapes and still lives, fresco paintings, mosaic works, sculptural portraits and figurative compositions, graphic sheets,  set designs and sketches of costumes, architectural projects for the Far North and cities of the south of Russia. The exhibition is a rare opportunity to get acquainted with the creative laboratory of artists where their skills are perfected to give birth to masterpieces.
