The Institute of Cervantes in Moscow and the Russian Academy of Arts in partnership with the Moscow Museum of Modern Art present the exhibition “Poetics of Abstraction and Figurativeness. Spanish Art of the 1950s-1960s”. The exhibition features 36 works of painting, graphic art and sculpture fr om private collections.

The curators of the exhibition: Marisa Oropesa and Maria Toral

Participants of the exhibition:
7 artists from the Madrid Realists group: Esperanza Parada, Amalia Avia, Julio Lopez, Francisco Lopez, Maria Moreno, Antonio Lopez, Isabel Quintanilla;
10 artists from El Paso group: Manuel Millares, Manuel Rivera, Luis Feito, Antonio Saura, Rafael Canogar, Martin Chirino, Juana Frances, Antonio Suarez, Manuel Viola, Pablo Serrano.
The artist Lucio Munos –  a “connecting link’ between the above two art trends.

All these artists have already gone down in the history of Spanish art as initiators and key figures of the artistic revolution. For the first time, the exhibition brings  together works by all the members of El Paso and Madrid Realists groups. The artists are together in perfect harmony, although it is not surprising if we recall that all of them are successors of the Spanish painting tradition. They have absorbed   the life-giving juice of the sources, which determined their creativity: the brush stroke of Velazquez, severity of Zurbaran, Goya’s tension. The influence of the great masters is obvious.

The exhibition is a unique opportunity to transfer into the key moment for Spanish art critical for subsequent development of art trends in Spain. The works of these 18 artists brilliantly illustrate the thought of Albert Camus: “To be a revolutionary, it is necessary to believe in something wh ere there is nothing to believe in”.
