Life at the Speed of 1/100 Sec. The 19th Century Painting of Russian Estates from the Collection of Sergey Soloviev: Exhibition in Tsereteli Art Gallery

The Russian Academy of Arts and Sergey Soloviev Cinema Line Studio present an exhibition project of the celebrated Russian film director, script writer, producer, People’s Artist of Russia Sergey Soloviev including two art shows: “Life at the Speed of 1/100 Sec” (photographs and video) and “The 19th Century Painting of Russian Estates” from the collection of Sergey Soloviev.

Sergey Soloviev is well known in many countries. He was born in the town of Kem of Karelian Region in 1944. At the age of 8 he was given a photo camera “Amateur” and photography became an integral part of his life. Since his debut in cinematography in 1968 Sergey Soloviev has been living at the speed of 1/100 second. In 1969 after graduation from the director’s department of the Russian State University of Cinematography named after S. Gerasimov (VGIK) he began his work at Mosfilm studio. Since 1982 Soloviev has been teaching at the director’s department of VGIK, as well as is a head of director’s workshops of the Higher Courses for Directors and Script Writers. He is a holder of the USSR State Prize and many international honors and awards.

His films, plays and scenarios have become a worthy contribution to Russian culture. He is an author of famous films “Assa”, “Black Rose – an Emblem of Grief, Red Rose – an Emblem of Love”, “The House Under the Star Sky”. Usually, he himself writes scripts for his films creatively reinterpreting classical literary works, among them are his screen versions of plays by Anton Chekhov, novel by Maxim Gorky and others. He also actively works as a stage director  (Three Sisters (VGIK Workshop), Uncle Vanya (Maly Theater), Chaika (Fellowship of Actors in Taganka).

On display in Tsereteli Art Gallery are almost 100 paintings from Soloviev’s Russian art collection and a vast collection of photographs made by him showing  moments of his private life and the life of his friends, photo tests for many films, as well as a brilliant kaleidoscope of photo portraits, photos of nature’s rare moments that in their interaction, as the author says, constitute the “mysterious notion of happiness”.
