My Quiet Russia: Major Retrospective of Works by the People’s Artist of Russia Sergey Kupriyanov at the Russian Academy of Arts

Organized to mark the 60th anniversary of the creative work by the People’s Artist of the Russian Federation Sergey Kupriyanov, the retrospective exhibition at the Russian Academy of Arts features over 200 landscapes, still lifes, portraits, illustrations for children’s books made by the artist in various years.

Sergey Kupriyanov’s work develops the traditions of Russian realist art. He was born in Moscow in 1928 into a family of an artist. In 1954 he graduated from V. Surikov Moscow State Academy Art Institute where he majored in graphic art. Kupriyanov has worked for Detguiz, Molodaya Gvardia, Malysh publishing houses and illustrated more than 100 books for children.

The landscape of Russia is the artist’s favorite topic. The impressionistic freedom combined with a classical perfection of composition give Kupriyanov’s lyrical landscapes a special depth and significance while retaining his lively study-like immediacy.

Many of his works have been devoted to Moscow. The artist’s watercolors portray the unique spirit and architecture of his native Zamoskvorechye – an old Moscow district opposite the Kremlin. His work “My Pyatnitskaya” is a dedication to the street where he has been living for all his life.

All Kupriyanov’s works including those with his reflections of life remind us how beautiful is the land we live on.
