The Russian Academy of Arts hosts a retrospective of works by Vera Ermakova (1923-1982), the talented painter, recognized master of the portrait genre and lyric landscapes, a pupil and follower of her teacher, People’s Artist of the USSR Sergey Gerasimov (1885-1964).

Vera Ermakova has created a vast portrait gallery of noted Russian statesmen, generals and veterans of War, figures of science, art and culture, villagers, among them are the leading Soviet rocket engineer and spacecraft designer Sergey Korolev, Academicians F.N. Petrov and P.K. Anokhin, spaceman B. Egorov, Marshal and Twice Hero of the Soviet Union M.E. Katukhov, General of the Army D.D. Lelyushenko, actress Knipper-Chekhova, soloist of the Bolshoi Theater Larisa Nikitina, People’s Artist of the USSR N. Kryuchkov, sculptors I.M. Rukavishnikov, S. Tugarinova and many others.

Vera Ermakova was born in Ryazhsk, Ryazan region. Since 1943 till 1949 she studied in V. Surikov Moscow State Academy Art Institute under Sergey Gerasimov, the eminent Russia master who had a rare gift of a landscape painter and a talented portraitist. Her teachers were also A.V. Lentulov, I.I. Chekmazov, V.V. Favorskaya. Since 1949 Vera Ermakova was a member of the Moscow Union of Artists and a frequent exhibitor in numerous art shows in Moscow and other cities of Russia.

For many years her close friends and colleagues were artists V.V. Favorskaya, V.F. Shtranikh, G.I. Tseitlin, P.P. Ossovsky, S.I. Dudnik, M.G, Abdulaev, V.A. Pribylovsky, the Rukavishnikov family of sculptors and others.

One of the peculiarities of her painting was the artist’s preference to a coarse “Repin’s canvas”. As a rule, she prepared the priming herself using the advice of old masters of painting and her own recipes.

A special place in her work belongs to landscapes of Russia and still lifes. In the 1970s along with her oil paintings Ermakova continued the theme of a lyrical landscape - landscape of mood in the watercolor technique on the “wet sheet of paper”.

Her works are in museum collections in Moscow including the Tretyakov Gallery, as well as in private collection in Russia, CIS countries, France, Italy, Austria, the United States, Croatia, India, Japan.

On display at the Russian Academy of Arts are also works by Vera Ermakova’s friends and teachers from the artist’s private collection.
