Russia and the Russians: Solo Show of the People’s Artist of the Russian Federation Nickolai Ivanov at the Russian Academy of Arts

The Russian Academy of Arts presents a major retrospective of works by the People’s Artist of the Russian Federation, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Arts Nickolai Ivanov. On show are sculptural portraits, compositions on historical themes, genre scenes, nudes, landscapes produced by the artist for several decades of his creative work.

Nickolai Ivanov belongs to the generation of Moscow artists who started their careers in the 1960s. Having graduated from S. Stroganov Moscow University of Industrial and Applied Arts, the young sculptor became a frequent participant in All-Russia, Moscow and international exhibitions. During this period he was known as an author of sculptural portraits and genre compositions, as well as sculptures produced of wood.

Nickolai Ivanov works both in monumental and easel sculpture. For over forty years of his creative work he has created a vast portrait gallery of his contemporaries and outstanding personalities such as M. Lomonosov, E. Tsiolkovsky, M. Skobelev, composers N. Rimsky-Korsakov, S. Rakhmaninov, M. Musorgsky, poets and novelists A. Pushkin, A. Tvardovsky, N. Gogol, A. Kuprin and others. Of special interest is his sculptural composition “Peter I, Alexander Menshikov, Katherine I”.

The sculptor has authored more then ten monuments in various cities of Russia: to K. Timiryazev in Kaluga; to F. Tyutchev and I. Bardin in Moscow; A. Fet in Orel; A. Ostrovsky in Kineshma, as well as monuments to victims of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 in Arkhangelsk, Belgorod, Novosibirsk and other regions.

Well-known are his memorial plaques commemorating Academician A. Tikhonov, the Hero of Russia V. Savitskaya in Moscow, the founder of the Art Museum in Ivanovo merchant D.Burylin, to Marc Chagall in Vitebsk and many others.

In 1995 Nickolai Ivanov was awarded the title of the Honored Art Worker of the Republic of Dagestan for his monuments to citizens of Dagestan who were killed in World War I and World War II and to heroes of Kizlyar who gave their lives during the war in Chechnya.

Simultaneously, the sculptor has been working on his landscapes full of lyricism and graphic sheets that are also on display at the Russian Academy of Arts.

Nickolai Ivanov has been actively involved in teaching activity, he is a Professor of S. Stroganov Moscow University of Industrial and Applied Arts.
