Exhibition of Works by Alumni of the Graphic Art Workshop Headed by Alexei Shmarinov

Tsereteli Art Gallery hosts an exhibition of works by alumni of the Graphic Art Workshop of the Russian Academy of Arts headed by the People’s Artist of the Russian Federation, Academician of the Russian Academy of Arts Alexei Shmarinov. Creative workshops are an important stage in the system of art education at the Russian Academy of Arts (art lyceum, art institute, post-graduate training in a workshop).

Creative workshops of the Russian Academy of Arts (painting, graphic art, sculpture, design, architecture, theatrical and decorative art, monumental painting) located in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kazan and Krasnoyarsk offer a three-year course of in-depth study and perfection of skills for graduates of art institutes.

The Moscow Graphic Art Workshop was set up in 1962. In various years it was headed by Dementy Shmarinov (1962-1996), Evgeny Kibrik (1966-1978), Orest Vereisky (1978-1989), Nikolai Ponomarev (1989-1997). Since 1997 the workshop has been headed by Alexei D. Shmarinov, Academician of the Russian Academy of Arts, People’s Artist of the Russian Federation, Winner of I. Repin State Prize of the Russian Federation, Honorary Member of the Austrian Society of Art Workers.

The artist’s greatest achievements are in easel painting and book graphics, he is skilled in various printing graphic techniques and is a brilliant master of watercolor painting, his favorite one.

Born in a family of the eminent Russian painter Dementy Shmarinov, since his childhood Alexei Shmarinov has lived in an artistic environment and highly appreciates the individuality of each creative personality. In his teaching practice he is very sensitive to his students’ originality, tries to preserve and advance their own pictorial language.

On show in Tsereteli Art Gallery are works by the alumni of the graphic art workshop headed by Alexei Shmarinov. Many of them are now recognized artists and winners of Gold and Silver Medals of the Russian Academy of Arts, Diplomas of the Moscow Union of Artists, Ministry of Culture and the Russian Academy of Arts. The holders of the Gold Medals of the RAA are M.R. Gataullin, E.Y. Pavlenko, T.I. Smirnov, A.V. Goshko, the Silver Medals – K.V. Petrov, A.Y. Novoselov, V.E. Zaitsev, E.N. Novikov, D.R. Aptikaev. After their post-graduate training some young artists become teachers of art education entities.

The exhibition is one more proof, that the system of art education at the Russian Academy of Arts including the post-graduate highly professional training is efficient and allows to hand down traditions of graphic mastery to new generation of artists. Among the Members of the Russian Academy of Arts are such graduates of the above workshop as N.L. Voronkov, V.V. Dranishnikov, V. Y. Zhelvakov, A.A. Lyubavin, K.V. Petrov, D.N. Sandzhiev, A.I. Teslik, R.I. Yakushev.
