Artists-Teachers and Alumni: Exhibition of Works by Artists of the Fine Arts Department of the Teachers’ Training Institute of the Southern Federal University

On show at the Moscow State Academy Art Lyceum are works by teachers of the Fine Arts Department of the Teachers’ Training Institute of the Southern Federal University, as well as students’ works of various years and works by its alumni. The exhibition is a good opportunity to get acquainted with this art school located in the South of Russia and its creative potential.

The Fine Arts Department of the Teachers’ Training Institute of the Southern Federal University was set up in 1971. Since then a whole galaxy of artists-teachers has been trained at the Department, who are now a pride of the South of Russia and the country in general. The high professional skills of its graduates, a wide range of their intellectual and creative interests provide them with a possibility to combine both their creative and teaching activity, to take an active part in the art life of the Southern Region and exhibit their works in Russia and other countries.

Since its foundation the Fine Arts Department has boasted of its teachers – the best masters of fine arts in the Region such as Honored Artist of Russia V.F. Scheblanov, Honored Worker of Culture E.Y. Pokidchenko and many others. At present here work Corresponding Members of the Russian Academy of Arts Sergei Oleshnya and Boris Belmasov. Many innovative methods and practices have been introduced in the teaching process since the middle of the 1990-s. The Department trains specialists in painting, graphic art, sculpture and design, it actively collaborates with V. Surikov Moscow State Academy Art Institute.

Last year the President of the Russian Academy of Arts Zurab Tsereteli initiated an establishment of the Southern Regional Department of the Russian Academy of Arts on the basis of the above Fine Arts Department. In September, 2009 Zurab Tsereteli visited Rostov-on-the Don to open his solo show. He also gave masterclasses to students of the Fine Arts Department and visited an exhibition of works by its teachers. As a result, he suggested arranging an exhibition of works by teachers and students of the Fine Arts Department and Children’s Art Center of the Teachers’ Training Institute of the Southern Federal University in the Moscow State Academy Lyceum which is one of the most prestigious exhibition venues of the Russian Academy of Arts.
