Successors of the Great Art: Annual Show of Diploma Work by Graduates of I. Repin St. Petersburg State Academy Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture

The exhibition continues the tradition of showcasing diploma work by the final year students of I. Repin St. Petersburg State Academy Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in the gala halls of the historical building of the Russian Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg. This annual show marks the culmination of the six-year study at the Institute and provides visitors with a rare opportunity to view works of the generation of artists who having studied the best specimens of the classical art heritage question what it means to be producing art in 2010.

A diploma is the first serious experience in independent creative work testing a student’s potential both professional and personal. For the first time the exhibition presents diploma work by graduates of all the departments of I. Repin Institute. The painting department is represented by students of the easel, religious and historical, restoration, theatre and decorative art workshops. A special section in the exposition shows the entire process of the creation of a monumental painting from sketches to its execution in the interior of a building.

Works by the final year students of the graphic art department demonstrate their high professional skills and a wide range of their interests. Linocuts, xylographs, pen and ink drawings, pastels, watercolors, tempera and gouache are only a few from the diversity of the techniques and materials used by the artists in their works. Besides the easel works on display are also sketches for future book illustrations.

Of major interest are works by students of the sculpture department and designs of new museum, trade and recreation complexes, new housing estates for St. Petersburg and Leningrad region executed by graduates of the architecture department. For the first time the show includes the best diploma works by art historians devoted to the history of Russian and world art.
