Display of Works by Sergei Tokarev (1949-2006) and Valentina Tokareva in the Russian Academy of Arts

The exposition includes paintings, drawings, works of theatrical and decorative art by Sergei Tokarev (1949-2006), Honored Artist of the Russian Federation and Valentina Tokareva.

Sergei Tokarev graduated from V. Surikov Moscow State Academy Art Institute, where he majored in theatrical and decorative art under such recognized masters as M.M. Kurilko-Ryumin, V.F. Ryndin, M.V. Alpatov, D.K. Mochalsky.

The circle of his interests is truly wide. He has designed theatre sets, participated in exhibitions, created illustrations to fairy-tales, books of Russian and foreign authors. In his works for theatres of Moscow, St.Petersburg and Minsk one can see his creative searches for new approaches to the visualization of a performance.

His last works are connected with M. Ermolova Moscow Drama Theatre. In 2005, for his theatrical costumes and set design for the performance “Is It That Tatyana?”  staged on Alexander Pushkin’s novel, Sergei Tikarev was awarded the first prize  of the festival  “Golden Knight”.

In his landscapes the artist reveals himself as a perfect colorist. His finely painted landscapes convey most sensitively the transitional states of nature and we clearly feel his idea of the poetic essence of life.  Of special interest in the exposition is his last painting “Church of St. Nicholas in Pyzhi”.

From 1974 Sergei Tokarev taught in S. Gerasimov All-Russian State Institute of Cinematography.

On display are also paintings, drawings,  watercolors by Valentina Tokareva. She is a gifted artist and a teacher.  From 1946 until 1992 she taught at the art and graphic department of the Moscow State Teachers’ Training University. Exquisite are her still lives with flowers, lyric cityscapes of Moscow,  numerous portrayals of Russian nature. She paints expressive, psychological portraits of her near ones and close friends. Being a master of graphic art, Tokareva has produced many children’s images that are profoundly lyrical and spiritual.
