Exhibition of Works by Masters of the Russian Academy of Arts in the Building of the Council of Federation

On November 12, 2008 the Russian Academy of Arts presented an exhibition of works by three generations of its academicians in the building of the Council of Federation, 26 Bolshaya Dmitrovka street.

Since its foundation in 1757, the Russian Academy of Arts has been the leading creative and educational institution in Russia. The importance of the Academy in the history of home and world art can scarcely be overestimated. The Academy’s prominent alumni created distinguished monuments of architecture and monumental sculptures adorning streets and squares of many cities throughout the world. Their canvases, sculpture, graphic works can be found in the collections of major world museums. For almost three centuries, the academic school has been a basis for professional education of artists of diverse directions and trends. Based on the preservation and creative development of its traditions, the Academy enjoys authority both in this country and abroad.

The exposition includes works by academicians Zurab Tsereteli, Tair Salakhov, Efrem Zverkov, Valentin Sidorov, Michael Kurilko-Ryumin who in the 1960s pioneered in home fine arts. These world recognized masters have been honored with numerous prizes and awards.

The representatives of the middle generation strongly reacted to problems of their time through their artworks. Academician, People’s Artist of Russia, professor Nikolai Solomin worked in Afghanistan and other “hot” spots. Honored Artist of Russia Alexander Michri traveled across the world and painted landscapes in Africa, Asian countries, Cuba. Academician, People’s Artist of Russia, professor Lev Shepelev has created his own school in modern graphic art well-known in this country and for many years has been involved in teaching.

The younger generation of artists started their work in the time of restructuring and radical changes in the 1980s and the 1990s. Sergei Goryaev, Eugene Romashko, Konstantin Petrov, Vladimir Sokovnin work in various genres of fine arts and head creative unions of artists.
