70 Years in Abramtsevo Exhibition of Works by Alexei Shmarinov

Timed to the 75th anniversary of Alexei Shmarinov, Full Member of the Russian Academy of Arts, the 70 Years in Abramtsevo exhibition in Abramtsevo State History, Literature and Art Museum-Preserve features the artist’s works from his cycles dedicated to heroic history of Russia.

It is not the first display of Alexei Shmarinov’s works to be held in this nature preserve. Since his childhood, the artist’s life has been connected with Abramtsevo, its remarkable history and notable works of literature and art created here. The Shmarinov family used to spend each summer in Abramtsevo in a rented cottage. After the war, they purchased a house in Abramtsevo where Alexei Shmarinov has been living and working for many years. To quote the artist himself: “In this place the nature is so wonderful though typically modest for this zone of Russia. In close vicinity there are legendary monuments of Russian history and culture: the Trinity Sergius Lavra in Segiyev Posad; Rostov Veliky; Pereslavl-Zalessky; Dmitrov, Radonezh. I have taken a great interest in hunting and walked the length and breadth of these lands. From my childhood, the nature and history of Abramtsevo have become a part of my mind and a powerful source for my creative work”.

The exposition includes a series of monumental prints entitled Heroes of Russian Nation of the 13th-15th centuries which ranks with the artist’s fundamental work: he collected stories of Russian chronicles and martial narrations of the 14th – 16th centuries. On show are also a number of lyrical watercolor landscapes representing one more facet of Alexei Shmarinov’s talent.
