Mikhail Abakumov commemoration meeting will take place on July 19, 2011 at 5 pm in the White Hall of the Russian Academy of Arts. Mikhail Abakumov (1948-2010), People’s Artist of the Russian Federation, Winner of the State Prize, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Arts, Honorary Citizen of the city of Kolomna is well known for his landscapes distinguished by his “pictorial” voice – it is a voice of our contemporary who struggles to cope with the dynamics of today’s life and a thirst for contemplation and peace.

On July 16, 2011 the descendants of the eminent Russian painter Ilya Repin (1844-1930) visited the Russian Academy of Arts, 21 Prechistenka street, viewed an exposition in Tsereteli Art Gallery and exhibition in honor of the 110th anniversary of the Estate “Penaty” where Ilya Repin had worked and lived for almost 30 years until his death with his second wife Natalya Nordman.

On June 14, 2011 at 21.00 the State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company (GTRK) “Alania” will present a documentary film about Vladimir Soskiev, the celebrated sculptor, Academician of the Russian Academy of Arts, Laureate of numerous prestigious awards, whose works are in collections of the Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum and many private collections. On January 14th, 2011 Vladimir Soskiev marked his 70th anniversary.

On July 8, 2011 in Chita (Zabaykalsky Krai) was inaugurated a sculptural composition “Love and Fidelity” designed by Aram Grigoryan, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Arts, Vice-President of the Artists’ Union of Russia. The unveiling ceremony has been timed to the Day of Family, Love and Fidelity celebrated in Russia since 2008 on the day of St. Peter and Fevronia of Murom.

On July, 2011 in the Novodevichy Cemetery in Moscow there was an unveiling ceremony for the monument to Igor Moiseyev, the great choreographer, founder of the world famous Ensemble of Folk Dance (Moiseyev Ensemble), People’s Artist of the USSR, holder of State Prizes and other numerous Russian and foreign awards. The sculptural composition has been designed by the People’s Artist of Russia Alexander Rukavishnikov and architect Sergey Sharov.

On June 27, 2011 there was an unveiling ceremony for a memorial plaque commemorating the eminent Soviet diplomat Anatoly Dobrynin (1919-2010) installed on the façade of the house in 18 Spiridonovka street. The memorial plaque has been designed by the President of the Russian Academy of Arts Zurab Tsereteli. The ceremony was attended by the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, U.S. Ambassador to the Russian Federation John Beyrle, President of the Russian Academy of Arts Zurab Tsereteli.

On June 24th, 2011 Geraldine Chaplin, daughter of the great Charlie Chaplin visited Tsereteli Art Gallery, 19 Prechistenka street. The actress is a Chairman of the Jury of the 33rd Moscow International Film Festival that is now being held in Moscow. The focus of her visit to Tsereteli Art Gallery was an exposition in a special hall dedicated to Charlie Chaplin.

On June 17, 2011 at the award ceremony in the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation Konstantin Petrov, the Academician of the Russian Academy of Arts, Vice-President of the Moscow branch of the Creative Union of Artists of Russia was presented with the Order of Friendship for his significant role in the promotion of Russian culture and art, as well as lifetime achievements.

On June 15, 2011 in Alexandrovsky Park near Gorkovskaya subway station was inaugurated a new tourist attraction “St. Petersburg in Miniature” containing bronze models of the most famous architectural masterpieces of St. Petersburg. The idea of this charitable project of Gazprom has come to Alexey Miller, Deputy Chairman of Gazprom’s Board of Directors during his trip to Amsterdam. In one of its squares he was impressed by a sculptural composition “The Night Watch” created by the sculptor, Honored Artist of Russia Alexander Taratynov as a 3D sculptural interpretation of the world famous canvas by Rembrandt.

On June 14, 2011 Zurab Tsereteli welcomed in Tsereteli Art Gallery, 19 Prechistenka street, a group of American students from the University of Dallas who are having a training course in Lomonosov Moscow State University. In early June they visited St. Petersburg and this time it was a rare opportunity for them to get acquainted with works by the President of the Russian Academy of Arts Zurab Tsereteli and to speak with the world renowned artist.

On June 7, 2011 in the Moscow Museum of Modern Art opened an exhibition “Masterpieces of the 20th Century” from the collection of the Valencia Institute of Modern Art (IVAM). The exhibition has been organized within Russia-Spain Cross Culture Year 2011. The President of the Russian Academy of Arts, Director of the Moscow Museum of Modern Art Zurab Tsereteli took part in the press-conference on the opening of the exhibition.

On June 6, 2011 the celebrated fashion designer Pierre Cardin came to Moscow to present the world premiere of his new collection in honor of the 50th anniversary of the first manned space flight. Upon his arrival to the Russian capital Pierre Cardin, an Honorary Member of the Russian Academy of Arts, visited the Russian Academy of Arts where he had a friendly meeting with its President Zurab Tsereteli.

On May 30, 2011 in Novinsky Boulevard in Moscow was unveiled a monument to the poet Joseph Brodsky, who had been awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. The sculptor of the monument is the People’s Artist of Russia, Academician of the Russian Academy of Arts George Franfulyan. The architect is Sergey Skuratov. The sculptural composition depicts the figure of the poet standing in the center of the granite base between two groups of people.

On May 31, 2011 in the White Hall of the Russian Academy of Arts, 21 Prechistenka street, was held the 7th annual award ceremony for Yury Orekhov Prizes in the field of sculpture. The Prize was set up in 2005 by the “Creative Legacy of Academician Yury Orekhov” Museum and the “Sculptor” Foundation for Support to Russian Sculptors under the auspices of the Russian Academy of Arts to foster young talented sculptors.

At the session of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Arts on May 24, 2011 the highest award of the Russian Academy of Arts – the Golden Cross for Services to Art was presented to the President of the Russian Academy of Arts, People’s Artist of the USSR and the Russian Federation Zurab Tsereteli; Academician of the Russian Academy of Arts, People’s Artist of the Russian Federation Gennady Pravotorov; Honorary Member of the Russian Academy of Arts, Honored Artist of North Ossetia and People’s Artist of South Ossetia Ushang Kozaev.
