Dmitry Shvidkovsky, Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Arts, Rector of the Moscow Architectural Institute, Doctor of Art History has been elected a Professor of the University Paris-Sorbonne (Paris IV), one of the oldest European universities.

On June 25, 2009 at the Moscow Museum of Modern Art President of the Russian Academy of Arts Zurab Tsereteli presented regalia of the Honorary Member of the Russian Academy of Arts to the Italian artist Francesca Leone. The ceremony was also attended by the world renowned composer Ennio Morricone, a friend of the artist’s family and author of scores for Sergio Leone’s films.

The first volume of the two-volume dictionary compiled by the Academy’s Research Institute of Theory and History of Fine Arts was presented at the session of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Arts on June 9, 2009. It covers the history of fine arts until 1917, the second volume deals with the period from 1917 till these days.

At the session of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Arts, Prof. Anatoly Bichukov, Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Arts, Rector of V. Surikov Moscow State Academy Art Institute, who has recently marked his jubilee, was presented with a Medal for Services to the Academy. The greetings telegram of the Russian President Dmitry Medvedev runs: “You have created a lot of remarkable monuments that are a part of the architectural image of Moscow and many other Russian cities, and today as a rector of the noted V. Surikov Art Institute you keep the best traditions of the national school of sculpture sharing the secrets of the professional skills with gifted young artists”.

The Russian pavilion at the 53rd Venice Biennale opened to the public on 4th June 2009 in the Giardini. The opening ceremony was attended by the Russian Minister of Culture Alexander Avdeev, President of the Russian Academy of Arts Zurab Tsereteli, Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Arts Tair Salakhov. The curator of the contemporary Russian art display titled Victory Over the Future is Olga Sviblova, the commissioner – Vasily Tsereteli.

Organized by the Embassy of Colombia in Moscow, the Caribbean Fantasy concert to be performed by the symphony orchestra of the Russian State TV and Radio Center will take place in Tsereteli Art Gallery on June 3, 2009 at 7 pm. The conductor is Francisco Sumake.

On June 2, 2009 at the session of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Arts Professor Dmitry Shvidkovsky was presented with “Shuvalov” honorary medal of the Russian Academy of Arts. In his telegram the Russian President Dmitry Medvedev appreciated the significant contribution of Dmitry Shvidkovsky as a prominent scientist to the history and theory of architecture.

Through the edict of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev, the Order of Friendship was awarded to Andrei Zolotov, the Honored Worker of Art of the Russian Federation, Member of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Arts, adviser to the Director-General of RIA Novosti news agency “for his services in the field of culture, press, broadcasting and long-term creative work”.

One of the priorities in the activity of the Russian Academy of Arts is its active involvement in the implementation of the large-scale international project “Year Russia – France 2010”. The President of the Russian Academy of Arts Zurab Tsereteli has been leading the work on its concept and structure of the exhibitions to be organized within the project. These are unique works from the collection of the Research Museum of the Russian Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg, shows of works by the imposing corps of members of the Academy representing diverse types of fine arts, design and architecture.
