IN THE SPACE OF VLADIMIR STASOV: RESEARCH CONFERENCE AT THE RUSSIAN ACADEMY OF ARTS

The Department of Art History and Art Criticism in partnership with the Research Institute of Theory and History of Fine Arts of the Russian Academy of Arts invite you to take part in the All-Russian Research Conference “In the Space of Vladimir Stasov” timed to the 200th birth anniversary of the renowned art historian and critic. The Conference will take place in the White Hall of the Russian Academy of Arts (21 Prechistenka street, Moscow) on April 10-11, 2024.

 

At present, the scale of the personality of Vladimir V. Stasov (1824-1906) and his real contribution to the study and critical understanding of many fields of Russian art in their integrity, as well as creative relations with the phenomena of the world art process has not yet been sufficiently studied and evaluated. The creative legacy of Vladimir Stasov – the Honorary Free Member of the Imperial Academy of Arts, Honorary Academician of Fine Literature of St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences, Head of the Art Department of the Imperial Public Library, an art and musical critic, art and literature historian, biographer and archivist, the noted figure of culture is enormous and of great significance for Russian culture.

 

This Conference deals with various aspects of the multisided activity of Vladimir Stasov - one of the most influential figures of Russian art life of the second half of the 19th century. The topics to be discussed:

-the book “The Art of the 19th Century” by V.V. Stasov;

-the world art through the eyes of the Russian art critic Vladimir Stasov;

-Vladimir Stasov in the circle of his contemporary art critics;

-Vladimir Stasov and the Academy of Arts. The school and “the movement of tradition”;

-the critic as a creator of the “artistic atmosphere” for art life and figures of art (the nature of V. Stasov’s influence on the phenomena and processes in art in his time);

- the artists of various types of art in the space of time and in the scale of the personal judgement of Vladimir Stasov;

-various spheres of the research and critical activity of Vladimir Stasov: fine arts; decorative and applied arts; music including the religious one); literature; philology; archaeology; library science;

-Vladimir Stasov and eminent figures of arts: Mikhail Glinka; Modest Musorgsky; Petr Chaikovsky; Fyodor Shalyapin; Lev Tolstoy; Ivan Turgenev; Maxim Gorky; Samuel Marshak; the “Wanderers” group; Ilya Repin; Alexander Ivanov; Valentin Serov, etc;

-Stasov and Dyagilev. Personalities of different directions with some similar educational aspirations;

-Vladimir Stasov in reflections, responses and assessments of his contemporaries and in the subsequent time;

-the Stasov family. Vladimir V. Stasov and Dmitry V. Stasov as figures of Russian culture.
