IN HONOR OF THE 90TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE HONORARY MEMBER OF THE RUSSIAN ACADEMY OF ARTS FEDERICO MAYOR

On January 27, 2024 the Spanish scientist, politician, public figure, poet, foreign Honorary Member of the Russian Academy of Arts Federico Mayor is marking his 90th jubilee.

 

The renowned Spanish scientist, politician and public figure Federico Mayor was born in Barcelona in 1934. He graduated fr om the Complutense University in Madrid wh ere he majored in pharmacy in 1956. In 1963 he became Professor of biochemistry at the School of Pharmacy of the University of Granada. For several years he occupied ministerial positions in the Spanish Government and later in the European Parliament. In 1987 Federico Mayor was elected Director-General of UNESCO and held the position till 1999. Federico Mayor has been a founder and President of the Foundation for the Culture of Peace since 2000. For his long and distinguished career he visited Russia several times and provided his full support to Russian cultural projects.

 

The President of the Russian Academy of Arts Zurab Tsereteli has congratulated Mr. Federico Mayor on his 90th Jubilee. The Letter of Greetings, in particular, runs:

 

“Dear Mr. Federico Mayor,

     The outstanding statesman and public figure you have made a great contribution to the maintenance of the culture of peace on the planet. In the position of the UNESCO Director-General you have visited Russia several times and efficiently promoted the international dialogue in the field of art and culture, as well as provided your full support to Russian cultural projects. Your work as the Doctor of Pharmaceutics and Professor of Biochemistry has been devoted to the disease prevention and warning humanity of the danger of the environment contamination and imbalance in nature. You are an author of numerous books and publications dealing with the future of humanity. The Russian Academy of Arts highly appreciates your talent of the poet who expressed in his poetic works the thoughts and worries about the present and the time to come.   

     I congratulate you on your 90th jubilee and wish you strength to continue your active multi-sided activity, to always remain an example of incredible efficiency and success achievement in various fields of life. I wish you new   accomplishments and creative longevity, happiness and family well-being”.
