The Department of Art History and Art Criticism of the Russian Academy of Arts (RAA) in partnership with the Research Institute of Theory and History of Fine Arts of the Russian Academy of Arts invite you to take part in the research conference – XXXIV Alpatov Readings “Alexey V. Shchusev and Russian Art Culture of the First Half of the 20^th Century. In Honor of the 150^th Anniversary of the Architect”, that will take place in the White Hall of the Russian Academy of Arts (21 Prechistenka street, Moscow) on November 23, 2023 at 10.30 am.  

 

The Conference deals with the creative activity of the eminent architect, Academician Alexey V. Shchusev (1873-1949), who worked successfully in different periods of Russian culture and created buildings in the neo-Russian style in the early 20^th century, in the style of constructivism of the 1920s and Stalin architecture of the 1930s-1940s. The Conference goals are: to study the art legacy of Alexey Shchusev in various years – the pre-revolutionary time, the 1920s and the 1930s-1940s; to explore the mutual influence of the work of the leading masters of the art culture of the first half of the 20^th century and Alexey Shchusev; to analyze A.V. Shchusev’s contribution to the Russian church architecture; to study the little-known side of A.V. Shuchev’s activity as a designer of church utensils; to analyze the impact of A.V. Shchusev on the architecture of constructivism; to explore A.V. Shchusev’s creative heritage in the Russian museum funds; to introduce new materials about the work of A.V. Shchusev in the 1930s – 1940s into scientific circulation. The above tasks and goals will allow us to generalize the significance of A.V. Shchusev’s work in the context of Russian and world architecture, to scrutinize the little known aspects of his creative legacy, to learn the unknown pages of his creative biography. The Conference will be accompanied by publication of a collective monograph.
