The Russian Academy of Arts in partnership with the Moscow International Foundation for Support to UNESCO present the research, education and exhibition project “The Beautification of the Cathedral of St. Sava in Belgrade” showcasing its implementation process. The Project education program includes lectures dedicated to the history and traditions of the Russian monumental art, as well as master classes in mosaic making to be given by the artists-participants of the mosaic interior decoration of the Cathedral of St. Sava in Belgrade. The attendees of the master classes will have an opportunity to choose one of the themes – “Still Life” or “Ornament” to create their own mosaic under the master’s supervision. The master classes are free of charge and will take place in the studio of the Museum and Exhibition Complex of the Russian Academy of Arts (19 Prechistenka street, Moscow). The master class on the Ornament theme is for a small group (or a family). First, a joint sketch of the ornament is created, then the work on the idea implementation is evenly distributed among the participants. The theme involves working with a tablet and is based on samples and offered illustrations.

One of the possible motifs of the “Still Life” mosaic is a bunch of flowers - a classical element in art. The participants can prefer as a sample both a real bouquet or a bunch of flowers depicted in an artist’s picture. Color primers will be used for this work. The mosaic making process is divided into two main stages: creation of the vase and creation of the flowers that will result in combining these two elements of the mosaic painting on the common background.
