The Russian Academy Of Arts

The Department of Art History and Art Criticism of the Russian Academy of Arts in partnership with the Research Institute of Theory and History of Fine Arts of the Russian Academy of Arts invite you to take part in the Research Conference – XXXIV Alpatov Readings “Alexey V. Shchusev and Russian Art Culture of the First Half of the 20^th Century. In honor of the 150^th  anniversary of the Architect”, that will take place in the White Hall of the Russian Academy of Arts (21 Prechistenka street, Moscow) on November 23, 2023.

The project is headed by Prof. Dmitry O. Shvidkovsky, the Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Arts, Academician-Secretary of the Department of Art History and Art Criticism, President of the Russian Academy of Architecture and Construction Sciences, Rector of the Moscow Institute of Architecture, Doctor of Art History. The Conference deals with the activity of the eminent architect, Academician of the Imperial Academy of Arts Alexey V. Shchusev (1873-1949) who successfully worked in various periods of Russian culture and created architecture in the New Russian style in the early 20^th century, in the Constructivism style of the 1920s and  Stalin architecture of the 1930s-1940s.

The Conference is aimed at:

-studying the artistic heritage of Alexey B. Shchusev  in various  periods – pre-Revolutionary time , in the 1920s, in the 1930s – 1940s;

-studying the interaction of  leading masters of art culture of the first half of the 20^th century and Alexey V. Shchusev;

- analyzing the contribution of Alexey V. Shchusev to the Russian church architecture;

-studying the little-known sides of Alexey V. Shchusev  as a designer of church utensils;

-analyzing the contribution of Alexey V. Shchusev to the architecture of Constructivism;

-studying the creative heritage of Alexey V. Shchusev in Russian museums’ funds;

-introduction of new materials about the creative activity of Alexey V. Shchusev in the 1930s – 1940s into research documentation.

The Conference will provide a possibility to analyze the significance of Alexey V. Shchusev’s work in the context of Russian and world architecture, to learn little-known aspects of his creative legacy and pages of his biography. The Conference will be accompanied by publication of its proceedings.
