15.11.2017 -
The Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, Department of Art History and Art Criticism of the Russian Academy of Arts, Association of Art Historians invite you to attend the panel discussion “Art and Politics. Satirical Works of the 20th Century Soviet Artists”, that will take place in the White Hall of the Russian Academy of Arts on November 15, 2017 at 15.00.
The Soviet satirical graphic art appeared soon after the Revolution of 1917 in 1919 when the first ROSTA Posters (Known as ROSTA Windows) were created by Mikhail Cheremnykh, Vladimir Mayakovsky and other authors who later became an illustrious group of artists of the “Crocodile” – the main satirical magazine in the USSR.
In the editorial boards of the “Crocodile”, “Jolly Fellows”, “30 Days” and other satirical publications worked such noted artists as Nickolai Radlov, Mikhail Cheremnykh, Ivan Malyutin, Konstantin Rotov, Yury Ganf, Leonid Brodaty, Boris Efimov, KuKryNicks, Alexander Deineka, Alexander Kanevsky, Nickolai Semenov, Vitaly Goryaev.
In the time of the Great Patriotic War 1941-1945 the ROSTA Posters were recreated and their political drawings and posters were of such powerful influence that the Soviet graphic satire obtained word fame. In the 1980-s the official satire lost its artistic perfection and style, but in the 1990-s it re-appeared not only in traditional drawings for newspapers and magazines, but in a new format of a satirical cartoon. The panel discussion is aimed at studying the Art and Politics
theme through the phenomenon of satirical graphics, posters and cartoons and will be accompanied by a one-day exhibition “Vitaly Goryaev. Satirical Drawings for the Crocodile magazine”.
