In April, 2016 there will be a consecration of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Iveron at the crossing of Michurinsky Prospect and Lobachevsky street. The Cathedral has been built according to an individual project and is reported to be the tallest among the churches that are being constructed in the capital – its height is 57 meters.
The central dome has been executed in the form of a high tent with a belfry inside resembling the old Russian architectural type of the 15th century churches. The Cathedral contains a unique holy object – the icon of Our Lady of Iveron painted by the masters fr om the Greek Mount Athos.
At present, the process of the Cathedral’s artistic decoration is nearly over. The authors of the project of its interior decoration are the Academicians of the Russian Academy of Arts Alexey Zhivaev and Evgeny Maximov who were actively involved in the construction of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow.
In the Cathedral’s lower church in honor of St. George the Victorious the artists of the Russian Academy of Arts have already completed their work. The church’s interior design is not typical to the Moscow style. The wooden gilded iconostasis, patterned carving and picturesque frescoes, as well as wall paintings have been created according to the specimens of old Athon monasteries. Of special interest is an entrance composition wh ere with topographical accuracy was reproduced the Holy Mount Athon with its monasteries and churches.
