Honorary Nobel Medal Was Presented to Zurab Tsereteli

In December the world celebrates Nobel Prize winners and pays tribute to the memory of the great inventor and philanthropist Alfred Nobel who instituted one of the most prestigious international prizes annually awarded in recognition of scientific and/or cultural advances.
Alfred’s elder brother Ludwig who made a significant contribution to the development of Russian science, industry and art and his son Emmanuel Nobel who was by right regarded as the 20th century oil tycoon have been business partners of Alfred Nobel. Emmanuel was Alfred’s beloved nephew and it was Emmanuel who supported the execution of the will and establishment of the prize contrary to the entire Nobel family.
In honor of Ludwig and Emmanuel at St. Petersburg Mint there has been produced a small series of honorary medals commissioned by the National Nobel Heritage Foundation.
Every year this medal is awarded by the joint resolution of the Heritage Foundation and the Nobel Family. In 2014, the medal went to the distinguished public figure, artist Zurab Tsereteli whose art contributes to the world salvation and beautifying.
Zurab Tsereteli’s peacemaking initiatives include the promotion of ideals of the Nobel movement as the utmost achievement of modern society. The artist highly appreciates the idea of the Peace Prize targeted at preservation of human values, formation of a common cultural space, strengthening of mutual understanding, tolerance and friendship among nations.
Zurab Tsereteli has created sculptural images of Alfred Nobel – a brilliant scientist who instituted and willed Nobel principles and his brother Ludwig who supported the initiative, as well as a series of images of Nobel Prize winners – Boris Pasternak, Alexander Solzhenitsyn, Joseph Brodsky, Ivan Bunin, Zhores Alferov.
The medal was presented to Zurab Tsereteli in the Art Gallery (19 Prechistenka street, Moscow) near the artist’s monument to Alfred Nobel.
