Visit of the President of the Russian Academy of Arts Zurab Tsereteli to Voronezh

The visit of the President of the Russian Academy of Arts to Voronezh on October 1, 2012 was timed to the jubilee events organized in honor of the 175th birth anniversary of the Russian painter Ivan Kramskoy (1837-1887).

One of the priorities of the activity of the Russian Academy of Arts is a promotion of creative ties with masters of fines arts in various regions of Russia including the Voronezh region. The 175th anniversary of the eminent Russian painter Ivan Kramskoy, who was born in the town of Ostrogozhsk in the Voronezh region, is marked by a major exhibition entitled “Academic Pleinair” involving artists of the Russian Academy of Arts, Voronezh, Belgorod, Kursk, Lipetsk, Orlov and Tambov regions who continue traditions of the national art culture. The exhibition was opened at I. Kramskoy History and Art Museum in Voronezh. In his welcome address Zurab Tsereteli appreciated the display and suggested that the participants should contribute to the enrichment of I. Kramskoy Museum collection and donate the Museum some of their works.

Within the framework of his visit the President of the Russian Academy of Arts met with the Governor of the Voronezh region Alexey Gordeev and supported the Governor’s proposal to establish a branch of V. Surikov Moscow State Academy Art Institute using the facilities of the Voronezh Art College including its new building that is being completed. The implementation of this idea will provide talented young people with a possibility to receive an academic education without leaving for Moscow or St. Petersburg.

Zurab Tsereteli also gave a master class in painting in the town of Ostrogozhsk for students of I. Kramskoy Art School and presented as a gift to the local art museum his still life executed at the above master class. He also visited I. Kramskoy House-Museum and laid flowers to the monument to Ivan Kramskoy.
