Commemoration Meeting in Honor of the 500th Birth Anniversary of Giorgio Vasari (1511-1574)

19.05.2011 - 19.05.2011

Within the framework of Russia-Italy Cross Culture Year, the Russian Academy of Arts invites you to attend a commemoration meeting in honor of the 500th birth anniversary of Giorgio Vasari (1511-1574), the Italian painter, architect and art historian of the Mannerism time, that will take place in the White Hall of the Russian Academy of Arts, 21 Prechistenka street, on May 19, at 2 P.M.

Vasari’s style in painting and architecture has been much influenced by Michelangelo in whose studio he worked. As an architect Vasari is most famous for his ensemble of the Palazzo degli Uffizi in Florence (1560-1585). Among his paintings the most important are wall and ceiling paintings in the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence (c 1555) and Sala Regia in the Vatican (1571-1573). In 1562 Vasari founded in Florence one of the first European academies of art - Accademia e Compagnia delle Arti del Disegno.

Vasari is best known as a man of broad vision and knowledge who made a big contribution to the history of art by his “Lives of the Most Eminent Painters, Sculptors and Architects” first published in 1550. It was enlarged in 1568 and still remains a valuable source of information about biographies of Italian artists of that time.

The commemoration meeting will be accompanied by a concert of music by composers of the Renaissance in the performance of the laureate of international competitions Natalia Sharoeva (piano).
