The presentation of the collective monograph “Artistic Aura: Origins, Perception, Mythology” will take place in the White Hall of the Russian Academy of Arts, 21 Prechistenka street, at 2 pm. The monograph is the first experience in the study of the phenomenon of artistic aura in the world science.
The research has been executed by specialists of the theory department of the Research Institute of Theory and History of Fine Arts of the Russian Academy of Arts. The team of authors also includes leading art historians of the State Institute of Art History in Moscow, Moscow State University, St. Petersburg State University and the Russian Museum.
Before, this notion has been used exclusively metaphorically for the definition of the inexpressible atmosphere, which a unique work of art is radiating “here and now”. It is in this meaning that it was used by the German philosopher Walter Benjamin in the 1930s. The authors of the book interpret the aura as an attributive property of art. They have scrutinized such forms of the aura as radiation, echo, tone, warmth, mood, atmosphere, respiration, melodiousness, fascination of artworks, as well as concepts of the evolution of the aesthetic properties of the aura in art history.
The program also includes presentations of author’s monographs by specialists of the theory department of the Research Institute of Theory and History of Fine Arts published in 2009-2010 :
