Surikov Moscow State Academy Art Institute. The topic of the defense was an elaboration of a pilot project for the international youth tourist city-satellite GAGARINGRAD with a memorial complex on the site where the first spaceman Yuri Gagarin landed. It is planned to be located near the city of Engels, Saratov Region and to be completed in 2011 to mark the 50th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin’s space flight.
Though the Architecture Department is rather young, the teaching has proved to be of a high level. The graduates coped with the very complicated task and brilliantly exe cuted their creative fantasy. The State Examination Board appreciated the degree works and selected the most promising ones.
The city is designed to have a radial structure. Around the inner perimeter will be constructed functional zones including a memorial, international hotel complexes with a water park and yacht-club on the bank of the Volga river, numerous sports facilities. The memorial will encompass a big international exhibition complex, an amphitheatre for 5000 seats and Yuri Gagarin memorial museum. The main path will connect the central square with the existing monument and the landing site.
