The second half of the 1960s for Kazakh painting was the time of searching for new ideas and expression of the national originality. The group of young and ambitious artists including Salikhitdin Aitbaev, Makum Kisamedinov, Shaimardan Sariev, Tokbolat Togusbaev, Bakhtiyar Tabiev, Abdrashit Sydykhanov, Erkin Mergenov, Tulegen Dosmagambetov, Vagif Rakhmanov, Isatai Isabaev, Oralbek Nurzhumaev and others challenged the established criteria in the fine arts of Kazakhstan. Despite the fact, that many of them got academic education in Moscow  and  Leningrad the creative strives of the generation of the 1960s were aimed at developing and strengthening of the national art school.

In their searches of the adequate artistic language and style the artists based on the traditions of the ethno-cultural heritage of nomadic tribes, that resulted in the understanding and interpretation of principles of folk creativity, application of color decorativeness, the plane of space, monumentality of forms, epic character of images, traditions of oriental miniature, as well as big interest in the Mexican monumental painting of the 20th century.

The work of artists of the 1960s is considered to be the highlight of the artistic thought in Kazakhstan. “The children of thaw”, as they were called then, abandoned the established canons and created their own unique art language and style.

“The dialogue of cultures, strengthening of cultural interactions between Kazakhstan and Russia are significant for fruitful functioning of art, creative growth of artists, exchange of experience between cultural institutions such as museums and academies. The exhibition gives a new impulse for mutual cooperation  and development” – noted Prof. Gulmira Shalabaeva, Director of A. Kasteev State Museum of Fine Arts of Kazakhstan.
