TWO SCHOOLS OF ANATOMICAL DRAWING: MASTER CLASS AT THE MUSEUM AND EXHIBITION COMPEX OF THE RUSSIAN ACADEMY OF ARTS

22.11.2023 -

The “Apple Hall” of the Museum and Exhibition Complex of the Russian Academy of Arts hosts a master class “Two Schools of Academic Drawing” that will take place on November 22, at 16.00 (19 Prechistenka street, Moscow). The master class deals with the problems of anatomical drawing. Such great artists of the Renaissance as Leonardo, Michelangelo, Durer have deeply and comprehensively investigated the structure of the human body as they considered it necessary for the creation of artworks. The plastic anatomy was firmly embedded in programs of Academies of Art in the 17th – 18th centuries as one of the main subjects for training artists. In Europe of the New Time the anatomical theater attracted not only doctors and artists, but was also of great interest for curious viewers. The President of the Imperial Academy of Arts A.N. Olenin (1817-1843) invited professors of the Military-Medical Academy to teach the plastic anatomy, initiated publishing original and translated anatomy textbooks for future art masters. In the 19th century, the distinguished Academy’s Professor and teacher of drawing Pavel Chistyakov considered perspective and anatomy as the principle sciences which knowledge was of the utmost significance for the professional work of painters and sculptors.

During the master class to be given by Alexander A. Golyshev – Associate Professor of the Chair for Painting and Composition of V. Surikov Moscow State Art Institute and teacher of anatomical drawing at S. Gerasimov All-Russian State University of Cinematography; Alexander N. Ryzhkin - Associate Professor of S. Stroganov State University of Arts and Industry and teacher of drawing and plastic anatomy, as well as Elizaveta N. Ryzhkina – Head of the Design Department of S. Stroganov State University of Arts and Industry, the attendees will have a rare opportunity to get answers to the questions: Does a contemporary artist need a plastic anatomy? What is the difference between today’s anatomy classes and anatomical studies in previous centuries? What methods do teachers of plastic anatomy use at present? What are the traditions and schools of studying plastic anatomy? The attendance is free.
