Unveiling of the Monument to Russian Emperor Alexander III in the Park of the Livadia Palace in Yalta

On November 18, 2017 in the park of the Livadia Palace  in Yalta there was an unveiling ceremony for the monument to the Russian Emperor Alexander  III designed by the People’s Artist of Russia, Academician of the Russian Academy of Arts Andrey Kovalchuk. The ceremony was attended by the Russian President Vladimir Putin, Plenipotentiary Envoy to the Southern Federal District Vladimir Ustinov, head of the Crimean Republic Sergey Aksenov, Governor of Sevastopol Dmitry Ovsyannikov, Metropolitan of Simferopol and the Crimea Lazar, Mufti of the Crimea Emirali Ablaev.

The monument has been installed on the site of the Small Palace destroyed during the Great Patriotic War. The sculptor depicted Alexander III sitting on a stone and leaning on a sword in the scabbard. Behind the figure of the Emperor there is a stele with a bas-relief showing the achievements of Russia in Alexander III’s reign. The stele is topped with a bronze double-headed eagle with three Imperial crowns. The pedestal contains a citation: “Russia has only two allies: its Army and Navy”.

The Russian Emperor Alexander III was born on March 10, 1845, a son of Emperor Alexander II and farther of the last Russian monarch Nicholas II. He ascended the throne on March 1, 1881 after the assassination of the Russian Emperor Alexander II by the terrorists of Narodnaya Volya. During Alexander’s reign Russia fought no major wars for which he was named “The Peacemaker”.
