The Monument to Uncle Styopa Designed by the People’s Artist of Russia Zurab Tsereteli Will Be Unveiled in Samara

On November 6, 2015 at 13.00, on the eve of  the Day of police officer celebrated in Russia on November 10, in Samara there will be an unveiling of the monument to the character of the well-known children’s poem by the distinguished Russian poet Sergey Mikhalkov – Uncle Styopa – “a good tall citizen” nicknamed Kalancha, who helps all those who are in need. The unveiling has been timed to the 80th anniversary of this poem and the Year of Literature in Russia.

The author of the monument is the renowned master of monumental art, People’s Artist of the USSR and Russia, President of the Russian Academy of Arts Zurab Tsereteli. This is the first Zurab Tsereteli’s sculpture in Samara.

The unveiling ceremony will be attended by Zurab Tsereteli, President of the Russian Foundation of Culture Nikita Mikhalkov, initiator of the monument’s creation and Deputy of the State Duma from the Samara region Alexander Khinshtein, representatives of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Samara City Administration, pupils of the Cadet Corps of the Ministry of Internal affairs, Samara residents and guests.        

In the center of the sculptural composition stands the figure of Uncle Styopa  surrounded by kids enthusiastically looking at him. The sentry Uncle Styopa is depicted in a pre-war militia uniform. He is an absolutely positive character and for many soviet children has become  a personification of justice and kindness.
