The 579th General Assembly of the Russian Academy of Arts

On December 11, 2014 there was the 579th General Assembly of the Russian Academy of Arts that summed up the Academy’s activity in 2014. In their addresses to the participants of the General assembly the Culture Minister of the Russian Federation Vladimir Medinsky, Advisor to the Russian President for Culture Vladimir Tolstoi and UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova noted, that the Academy had become one of the leading art schools in the world and wished the Academy  every success in its further development in the time of turbulence.

The sincere concern about the Academy’s future was expressed in the speech of Joseph Kobzon, the member of the State Duma of the RF and Honorary Member of the Russian Academy of Arts who made a lot of efforts in supporting the necessity of preservation of the unique art school at all the levels of governmental discussions.  

The Chief Scientific Secretary of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Arts O.A. Koshkin  in his general report to the Assembly underlined the great history of the Academy that had managed to preserve its traditions through the course of its history since 1757. In the September of 2013, there came into force the Federal Law N 253 “On the Russian Academy of Sciences, Reorganization of the State Academies of Sciences and Amendments in Some Legislative Acts of the Russian Federation”. The President of the Russian Academy of Arts Zurab Tsereteli expressed his confidence, that the cooperation with the Culture Ministry of the RF would result in preservation of the academic art school and structural integrity of the Russian Academy of Arts taking into account the wide range of powers to be delegated to the Academy by the Ministry of Culture.

In 2014, the Russian Academy of Arts (RAA) was involved in execution of state research and cultural programs including international and All-Russian conferences and forums on the problems of today’s art education, interaction of science and art in modern world, panel  discussions on  the correlation of art and religion, exhibitions of Russian and international artists, master classes of noted Russian artists, joint  activity with the Academy’s regional departments: “The Urals, Siberia and Far East Department”, “The Volga Region Department”, the “South Region Department” and many others.

In the debate on the report took part the leading masters of Russian fine arts and architecture, such as Vice-President and Academician-Secretary of the Architecture Department of the RAA M.M. Posokhin, Vice-President and Head of the Urals, Siberia and Far East Department A.P. Levitin, Academician A.L. Bobykin, Academician A.A. Zolotov, Academician-Secretary of the Painting Department E.N. Maximov, Director of the RAA Research Institute of Theory and History of Fine Arts A.V. Tolstoi, Academician-Secretary of Sculpture Department A.V. Tsygal, Academician-Secretary of the Theater and Cinema Decorative Art B.A. Messerer, Academician-Secretary of the Graphic Art Department A.I. Teslik, Academician N.A. Mukhin, Academician A.I. Rukavishnikov, Chairman of the Moscow Union of Artists V.A. Glukhov, Rector of I. Repin St. Petersburg State Academy Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture S.I. Mikhailovsky, Rector of V. Surikov Moscow State Academy Art Institute A.A. Lyubavin, Head of the Research and Organizing Department T.A. Kochemasova.

The adoption of the General Assembly’s Resolution was followed by an award ceremony. The Order For Services to Art was presented to Academicians D.D. Zhilinsky and R.F. Fyodorov, as well as the regalia of an Honorary Member of the Russian Academy of Arts was presented to Silvia Burini (Italy).
